What Are Heavy Duty Gantry Cranes and Their Different Types?

Heavy duty Gantry Crane-

A floor railed lifting solution with a single or more girders is a heavy duty gantry crane. A heavy duty gantry crane is an effective material handling solution that can lift extremely large safe working weights ranging from dozens to hundreds of tonnes to meet a variety of application needs. Gantry cranes are designed to handle large and heavy lifting items in both indoor and outdoor applications, such as the manufacturing industry, construction sites, shipbuilding industry, shipyard, port, rail terminals, and so on. Rail-mounted gantry cranes, rubber-tyred gantry cranes, and other forms of portable gantry cranes are all examples of heavy-duty gantry cranes.

In the material handling industry, the term "gantry crane" is frequently used. When people talk about gantry cranes, they're usually referring to an overhead bridge crane system. A gantry crane and a bridge crane are two types of overhead cranes that are significantly distinct.

Different Types of Gantry Cranes

1. Heavy duty Gantry Crane Systems- The most common configuration is a heavy duty gantry crane, which consists of two legs that ride on rail that is flush with the top surface of the floor. In a dedicated work area, they usually run in a straight line. Motorized equipment such as scissor lifts, forklifts, carts, and trucks can roll over it and pass underneath the crane because of its design.

2. Semi-Gantry Crane Systems- Gantry cranes can also be configured with one leg on wheels or rails and the other side of the crane on a runway system attached to building columns or a building structure's side wall. These are helpful because they can help you conserve room on your floor or at your workspace. This configuration, unlike a bridge crane, does not require two runways to be supported by or linked back to building columns.

3. Portable Gantry Crane Systems- Smaller, lighter-duty gantry cranes with casters or rubber wheels are known as portable gantry cranes. The user may move it about a facility to handle varied materials or loads thanks to the wheels. When they're empty and not in use, they can be moved or stored anywhere in the shop, including into various work cells, to maximize space efficiency and flexibility.

4. Adjustable Gantry Crane- Variable height and span designs are possible with adjustable gantry cranes. When carrying a gantry system in and out of a facility or through different regions of a shop, adjustability allows the end user to modify the height of the beams, giving them more freedom.

What Are Gantry Cranes Used For?

Cranes with a full gantry or semi-gantry are widely employed in large fabrication applications or in outdoor yards such as rail yards, shipping and container yards, steel yards, and scrap yards.

They're also employed in cement and precast applications for forming and curing slab concrete. Their design allows forklift trucks and other motorized vehicles to work and pass beneath them, allowing them to be used outside.

Typically, portable gantry cranes are used to hoist and hold goods in place while they are being worked on, produced, or assembled. The gantry can be moved to operate on various pieces of equipment, even if the cargo isn't necessarily transported across the facility.

Portable gantry systems can provide more flexibility than a jib crane or workstation crane. A jib crane is typically installed on a poured concrete foundation, and once in place, it stays put. A smaller portable gantry crane may do the same tasks as a jib crane, but it can be moved about your warehouse as your business expands and you begin to optimise and layout warehouse space.

Gantry cranes are ideal for high-volume lifts because they are a speedy and efficient means to transport large loads through a yard, fabrication shop, or general manufacturing/warehousing environment. Keep the following in mind while designing the most cost-effective and productive gantry crane system for your application:

The components are durable enough to withstand the load and usage requirements if the proper duty cycle or service rating is chosen-

1. Will you be using a full gantry system, a semi-gantry system, or a portable gantry system? Is the gantry going to be moved on rails, track, or wheels?

2. Will there be people or other equipment working near the gantry, either on foot or by car? Will any components require extra protection or a different orientation to avoid damage in the event of a collision?

3. Indoors/Outdoors: Is the crane going to be used inside, outside, or both? On an outdoor gantry system, special paint processes, materials, and components may be necessary to endure the elements.

4. Requirements for power: Will a cable reel be enough for power transmission, or will something more tailored be required? Would you have a power supply nearby if you're using a portable gantry system, or will you need a longer extension cord?
